UPDATE: Sorry, I forgot to select/announce our winner from last week’s contest. Congratulations to Cheryl McCoy who wins a free pouch of tea from 52teas!

So, you all know that I have been working on clearing out the last of my Zoomdweebie’s Tea Blends to make room for more 52teas, ManTeas, and MySweetHoneybush blends. I had a lot of teas pouched up, and I had a lot of tea waiting to be pouched. From the latter, I have created our tea of the week for this week.

I know many of you think I am crazy; I’m confirming your suspicions with this week’s blend, which is TRULY and completely one-of-a-kind and definitely a limited edition blend. I could not recreate this if I tried. In varying and unknown proportions, this tea has all of the following blends mixed into it:

Apple
Apricot
Blackberry
Blueberry
Cranberry
Cherry
Ginger
Grapefruit
Key Lime
Lemon
Lime
Mango
Orange
Peach
Pineapple
Raspberry
Strawberry
Watermelon
Ginger, Peach and Lemongrass
Tangerine
Banana
Honey Lemon
Guava
Cran-Raspberry

There are fruit peels, dried fruit, freeze dried fruit, some ginger and some lemongrass mixed in it. It is spectacularly ridiculous. I’m not sure if you will taste each of the flavors in every cup or if every cup will be a little different, but it will definitely be interesting.

Brandon is one of our most loyal customers at our brick and mortar shop, Zoomdweebie’s Tea Bar. If there has been a week over the past two or three years since he first discovered us that Brandon has not stopped in, I certainly can’t remember it. He is always there, enjoying our teas and sharing his quirky sense of humor with everyone around him.

Brandon kind of reminds me of a snickerdoodle–a bit spicy and tough on the outside, but warm and inviting once you get to know him.

Brandon likes to make some of his own concoctions at Zoomdweebie’s, asking me to brew him up a little of this with a little of that (or to brew the hot tea into a mug full of gummy bears as I recall…) One of his recent favorites is to blend vanilla and cinnamon teas which he has been hounding me about blending together and naming it “Brandon’s Blend”.

Here then, Brandon, is your fifteen minutes of fame.

Please note that as we start to slow down for these summer months, I will be making smaller batches of each tea of the week. This week we have only 12 pouches left after taking care of our subscribers, so don’t drag your feet, this tea is going to go FAST!

For those of you who closely watch for our new tea each week, I apologize; I’m having a really rough week, but I’m doing my best to pull my head out and get my poop in a group.

This week’s tea ought to help. It’s our premium black teas blended with real dried cranberries, freeze-dried strawberries and natural flavors. Just the thing for a delicious iced tea after what seems like two months of 110-degree weather here in Wichita, Kansas.

Hope you enjoy it as much as I am!

Yeah, okay, so I was thinking of doing an Earl Grey or a Jasmine and neither seemed special enough for 52teas, so I figured, “We’ll do BOTH! In ONE tea!” So here it is, our awesome Chinese sencha blended with real jasmine blooms natural jasmine flavors and just a hint of natural bergamot flavors. It smells good enough it’s making me want to lick the mixing bowl.

Here’s something a little different this week. If you have been watching 52teas for any amount of time, you’ll already be aware of my love affair with honeybush. Well, we have made it official and launched our newest brand and website: MySweetHoneybush.com.

I love creating new honeybush blends so much, that I decided we needed a new platform just for my honeybush blends. You will find all kinds of honeybush blends on the new website, with more to come. So, by way of introduction to the new site, here is our Tea of the Week for June 28th, 2010, MySweetHoneybush.com‘s Lemonbushomile.

And WOW, you guys are going to LOVE this. It is red honeybush blended with chamomile, lemongrass, lemon peel, hibiscus, lemon myrtle, and natural lemon flavors. It is SOOOO delicious and relaxing, hot or iced. Personally, I am not a huge chamomile fan, but blended with the sweet red honeybush, it is amazing!

So, go visit our new website to see all of the cool honeybush blends we are creating. The Lemonbushomile is available there and (temporarily) here. Enjoy!

…lime in the coconut and you blend it with green yerba mate, lemon balm, lemon verbena, lemongrass and natural flavors, and you have one delicious beverage!

I know I promised some folks a honeybush blend this week, but I’m working out a few more details on that blend–stay tuned. For this week, we have a truly unique and delicious blend of green yerba mate with lime/lemon and coconut. This is really delicious as an iced tea, the creamy notes of the coconut and the tangy citrus notes do battle for the attention of your tastebuds. I had a big icy stein of this earlier and it’s really, really delicious. You’re not going to want to miss out on this one.

If you are not familiar with Yerba Mate, you might want to read what we wrote about it here.

My grandparents were part of that “Greatest Generation” of Americans. My grandfather served in the Navy in the South Pacific during World War II. After the war, he became an auto mechanic and opened his own garage. My grandmother was a registered nurse. In my recollection of her, I always thought she came from something of a well-to-do family, or she had aspirations to be a well-to-do family. (I can’t help but think about Hyacinth Bucket in the BBC comedy Keeping Up Appearances; my grandmother wasn’t that bad, but there was an element of Hyacinth in her).

Anyway, whenever the family got together at grandma’s house, she had these extravagant meals planned that frequently started with fruit cocktail. I can’t say why this fact has stuck in my memory more than others, but I remember the Thanksgiving and Christmas Eve dinners with fruit cocktails all around to start. I remember thinking it was like getting dessert before dinner.

So, in memory of my grandparents, here’s our delicious Chinese sencha blended with real peach, pear, pineapple and natural peach, pear, pineapple and maraschino cherry flavors. It’s so delicious, you could serve it as a first course.

We haven’t done a mid-week blend for a while, and I have just the blend for you this week!

I know we are normally all about the flavored teas, but here’s something a little different. If you are a tea newbie (like we all were at some point), then you might not know this but teas from different regions of the world have very different flavor profiles. Rainfall, altitude, and soil conditions all have an impact on the final leaf. It may all come from the same plant, but the result is very different depending upon where it is grown: from the valleys of Assam to the high mountain grown “Ceylon” teas of Sri Lanka.

Interesting aside: Although it is generally accepted that the best teas in the world come from India, China, Japan, Sri Lanka and Taiwan, currently, the number one exporter of tea to the United States is…. drumroll, please… Argentina!

Argentina produces a third-rate, mechanically harvested tea which the big grocery store teabag brands use to fill their teabags. This is one of the main reasons why specialty tea companies like ours can exist. Our teas are 1000% better! Okay, off my soapbox now, and back to the tea at hand…

What we have here is a collection of some of the best single-estate Assam teas we could find, blended together to give you

The Essence of Assam

Contains: Dinjan/Kondoli Estate Extra Bold FOP, Dejoo/Greenwood Estate STGFOP, Rembeng Estate Organic FTGFOP, Oakland Estate TGFOP, Oakland Estate TGFOP, and Greenwood Estate Classic STGFOP.

(If you are wondering about those letters, they are simply a measure of the leaf size. Contrary to popular belief, Orange Pekoe (OP) is not a type of tea, it is a leaf size rating. It is the smallest of the whole leaf classes. Flowery Orange Pekoe (FOP) is next, then Golden Flowery Orange Pekoe (GFOP), followed by Tippy Golden Flowery Orange Pekoe (TGFOP), and finally, Finest Tippy Golden Flowery Orange Pekoe (FTGFOP–otherwise known as “Far Too Good For Ordinary People”). A leading ‘S’ in front of any of these grades indicates that the manufacturer considers it “Superior”).

So now that you have been schooled, you really need to give this Assam blend a try. I think most tea enthusiasts would agree that the basic characteristics of a good Assam tea is that it is a bold, dark blend with some honey-like characteristics, particularly when combined with cream and sugar. I personally think this blend with a bit of cream and sugar tastes like a Bit-O-Honey in a mug.

Orange you glad we didn’t just do another ho-hum Orange tea? Oh, my darjeelings, we couldn’t do that to you!

Instead, here’s a blend of real Margaret’s Hope Estate Darjeelings blended with real orange peel and natural orange and cream flavors. It’s a Dreamsicle Darjeeling. There’s some purists out there who might find it an outrage that we would create a flavored blend with what is known as the “Champagne of teas”, but we’re not scared. Give this a shot and you’ll be wondering why no one has attempted it before.

Just remember that Darjeeling is a bit more delicate than most black teas. Some tea nerds would argue that it is technically an oolong, as it is only oxidized about 90%. The upshot of all of this is that you have to steep it in water just below the boiling point (180-190°) for three to four minutes only.

So, without further ado, here is our orangey-creamy, delicious darjeeling tea of the week:

New Contest!

So, we really want you to subscribe to our email newsletter, and we want you to read the posts we send you. I may not be John Grisham, but I think I write some pretty stirring prose about our teas.

So, our free pouch giveaway contest is going to change. From now on, one or more of our posts each month may contain an invitation like the one below. You must actually have the post in your email inbox to reply to in order to win, so if you haven’t already done so, please take a moment to fill in your name and email address under the “Join Our Mailing List” section on our website. You can opt-out any time you like.

This week’s trivia challenge:
According to our post, darjeeling should be steeped for how long at what temperature?
