Tea of the Week for February 22, 2021!
The inspiration for this one comes from way back when we first took over 52Teas - one of our backers for the start-up Kickstarter campaign selected the "create a blend" reward. She couldn't decide between two tea ideas - a Banoffee tea & another blend idea. Ultimately, she decided on the other blend idea, but I kept the idea of a banoffee tea rattling around in my head - because BANANA!
Over the nearly 6 years since we've been doing this thing - we've crafted quite a few banana teas (some of them have been reblended on multiple occasions) - but I'm always excited for another banana tea. Banana is one of my very favorite tea flavors. This one is quite different from the others - because of the base we've selected for it.
This blend starts with a Scottish Breakfast blend - which is a blend of finely cut CTC black teas - which means it's SUPER rich, bold & malty! (Because of this, it's very important to pay attention to your steep time! This one can go from perfectly steeped to oversteeped & bitter in a matter of seconds!) This is the same blend I used for the Wake Me Up, Scotty! Blend.
The breakfast blend is then flavored with vanilla & toffee essence before it's blended with a bunch of organic, freeze-dried bananas! Have your dessert for breakfast! This blend is VEGAN, gluten-free & allergen-free!
PLEASE NOTE - Due to an operator error, this tea has been labeled "Banana Breakfast Blend" rather than Banoffee Breakfast Blend - the labels were misprinted.
Taster pouch is approximately 15g
organic ingredients: black teas, bananas, vanilla beans, calendula petals & natural flavors
Wow! This tea is packed with plenty of gusto!
Because the base is a very strong & even aggressive black tea - you're going to get some black tea notes right up front. But after a sip or two, you'll start to pick up on creamy, sweet notes of vanilla & a hint of banana. A few more sips & the banana starts to come forward a bit more. A few more sips & I start picking up on toffee - more creamy vanilla & more banana.
I recommend adding just a little bit of sugar to this to help bring out the flavors a bit more. I also recommend just a splash of milk or cream (I actually prefer half & half for this particular tea) - it brings out all the flavors really quite nicely (don't go overboard - just a splash works perfectly!)
A really tasty twist to the usual breakfast blend.
to brew: shake the pouch before you measure this tea out to make sure the tiny bits of vanilla bean are distributed throughout the pouch. use 2g to 12 ounces of near boiling water (205°F) & steep for 2 - 2 1/2 minutes (you don't want to oversteep this blend!) strain & allow to cool for about 10 minutes. enjoy!
