Tea of the Week for December 7, 2020: Mont Blanc Green Tea!

Posted by on

Usually, I prefer to release our blog notes about our monthly teas one tea per day to avoid going overboard & also to avoid the possibility of a tea getting lost in the shuffle - but because I'm a bit behind, I'm going to be going a little nuts in the next 30 hours or so. Bear with me!

Mont Blanc Green Tea!

Tea Description: While searching for "chestnut" recipes online one day, I came across a recipe for Mont Blanc. It's an Italian dessert: a sweet chestnut puree that's topped with cream. It sounded delicious & I thought, hey, that would make a tasty tea.

For this blend, I started with organic Chinese Sencha tea because I thought that the mild flavor & sweet, creamy flavor would lend itself well to this concept. Then I added vanilla beans, chestnut & vanilla cream essence & some freshly shaved nutmeg because - well, I thought nutmeg would be a yummy addition.

This is really quite nice. The chestnut flavor lends a hint of savory flavor to the sweetness of the vanilla - & the wee bit of nutmeg adds a hint of warmth to the overall cup. It's different - but really quite lovely!

OH! And yes! It is VEGAN, gluten-free, allergen-free (no nuts!) & organic.

organic ingredients: green tea, vanilla bean, nutmeg, calendula petals & natural flavors

PLEASE NOTE: Some of the labels were misprinted & do not include the full ingredient list. I apologize for the misprint.

I'm really liking this cuppa - the chestnut notes are somewhat starchy & savory, but also just a little bit sweet & lends a nice contrast to the warmth of the nutmeg & sweet creaminess of the vanilla tones. I taste the background notes of the sweet green tea as well. It's really pleasant & tasty to sip.

While I've never actually tasted the dessert, I'm really liking my tea representation of the dessert & it's making me want to try it sometime.

to brew: give the pouch a gentle shake. the vanilla beans are tiny & will most likely settle to the bottom of the pouch, so you want to get those redistributed throughout the pouch - the same goes for the nutmeg shavings. use 2 1/2 grams of leaf to 12 ounces of very hot water (heated to 175°F) & steep for 2 minutes. strain & allow to cool for at least 5 minutes. enjoy!

This tea doesn't need sweetener - I've tried it both with & without a wee bit of sugar. I found that the sugar addition did highlight the nutmeg notes a little - as well as the vanilla, but without the sugar, I still got a really lovely chestnut & vanilla flavor.
