Tea of the Week for April 19.2021!
Yeah - I know - I know. It's a holiday tea. It's a tea that is usually one of the highlights of our 12 Teas of Christmas due to its popularity.
However, I decided to make it in April this year - because while it didn't earn quite enough votes to make it's way in the 12 Teas of Christmas box for last year - it did earn enough votes to win a humble 3rd place in the box & it was only 1 vote away from the two top vote getters for the box (those two - Cherry Cola Honeybush & Strawberry Pie Honeybush - tied for the top spot in the poll) so I decided to go ahead and blend it for the reblend month this year.
This tisane was originally blended as a new blend for our 12 Teas of Christmas box in 2016. It's been reblended a couple of times since then - voted into at least one or two 12 Teas of Christmas boxes - it's one of the most popular blends I've created thus far. (I'm a proud tea mama!)
Here's my original description for this tea:
My inspiration behind this tea was the cranberry flavored lemon-lime soft drinks that come out around Thanksgiving. I thought that the best base for such a tea would be a green rooibos because it has a light, sparkling kind of taste to it naturally, and the light fruitiness of the rooibos would enhance the fruity flavors that I'd be adding to it.
Then I added lots of cranberries to the blend and some natural flavors to create a soda like taste.
Really nice! Light and crisp and refreshing!
You might notice something slightly different about this tea from previous batches of it. I added a lot more freeze-dried cranberries to this - including some freeze-dried cranberry powder - to amplify the cranberry flavor. It does make a difference in flavor - definitely more tangy cranberry taste to it - but it's that much better because of it, in my opinion.
I still get the soda notes, I still get the lemon and lime notes - but what I get more than anything else - is cranberry.
This tea is good served hot, but I strongly recommend trying it iced because hey - let's be honest - soda is better when it's cold! It's still very tasty served hot, but it shines as an iced beverage. Yep - it is organic, VEGAN, gluten-free, allergen-friendly & sugar-free (unlike the soda you'll get in the supermarket!)
Taster pouch is approximately 15g
organic ingredients: green rooibos, freeze-dried cranberries & natural flavors
I'm really excited at how this turned out. I've been working with using more actual fruit in my blends and less of the natural flavors & sometimes it works out - sometimes it doesn't. In this case, I think it definitely worked out. The tisane is just a little less sweet (if you prefer it more sweet, add just a teensy bit of sugar) & a little more tart from the cranberries. Still very much a soda taste - still has those nice background notes of lemon & lime. But cranberry really is the star of this cuppa!
I'm glad I don't have to wait until the 12 Teas of Christmas box to enjoy this tea again!
to brew: give the pouch a gentle shake to redistribute the ingredients. use 3 1/2 grams of leaf & fruit to 12 ounces of very hot water (185° - 190° F) & allow to steep for 8 - 10 minutes. (I went with the full 10 minutes.) strain & allow the tea to cool for at least 10 minutes. I recommend adding just a teensy bit of sugar to the cup because - quite simply - it's a soda flavored tea & the soda flavors will pop a little more with the addition.
It's still tasty without the sugar - but it definitely tastes more like the soda with the sugar than without.
